Yen for Northbrook School Board District 28
About
Kimberly Yen
Kimberly and her husband, Eugene have lived in Northbrook since 2012. They have three children, a junior and freshman at Glenbrook North and a 5th grader at Greenbriar Elementary.
Kimberly brings a unique perspective as a candidate with strong ties to District 28 working as both an employee and parent-teacher leader within the District. For the last five years, her position as a teaching assistant and substitute teacher has given her the opportunity to engage and support students directly while gaining insight into the complex issues affecting our children and teachers in 28 and beyond.
Additionally, her service as Greenbriar’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) co-president fostered collaboration between parents and school leadership to implement new standards and changes to the school benefitting all students and staff in the Greenbriar community. While navigating the PTO through the pandemic, Kimberly helped to orchestrate and revive school events to promote continuity while redefining and restructuring roles and responsibilities across the executive team to improve communication and efficiency. She also led efforts to introduce a more inclusive, multicultural curriculum, which resulted in the creation of the Greenbriar Cultural Fair and the redesign of the school's long-standing Art and Cultural Adventure program which showcases diverse perspectives and narratives.

Kimberly holds a M.A in Teaching and Curriculum from Michigan State University and continues her passion for education through curricular development that aims to provide the highest quality education to every student regardless of their background or abilities.
She believes that our school system should aim to be a system of care that supports not only students, but also families, teachers, and the broader public. Community is all about creating a sense of belonging and if given the opportunity to serve as a member on the Board of Education, Kimberly would work collaboratively with fellow board members, school administrators, teachers, and community stakeholders to address the challenges our district faces and to advocate for policies that promote equity, achievement, and innovation.
